As an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Larry pioneers and supports charities that spread the true Gospel of Christ. While many lose sleep worrying about the decimals of their pending retirement, Larry and his wife happily donated their retirement fund to start the Hands of Christ Fund at Asbury, “a ministry that provides financial assistance to those in need, helping them to break free from poverty by furthering educational or employment goals.” This ministry is truly one that keeps on giving, reflecting the heart of our Heavenly Father. One of the participants who was able to attend UAB as a part of the program wrote, “Thank each and every last one of you and I appreciate the love and support you guys have given me...I also will make a yearly pledge once I graduate and begin to work in my field to extend my gratitude and to help someone else that may be in the same situation I am in…”

What inspired you and your wife to establish the Hands Of Christ fund in 2007 and how can someone donate to this cause?
The Hands of Christ Fund at Asbury United Methodist Church was seeded with my retirement fund, after my wife Amy and I prayerfully considered what we could do to help break cyclical and generational poverty. Too many poor people desperately seeking educations that will enable them to secure good jobs fall through the cracks of traditional assistance. This fund provides tuition help, child care funding -- whatever is needed to keep the applicant moving toward success. We regularly support it still. Support can be provided to Asbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham, attention Hands of Christ. God has a neat sense of humor. Amy and I have a 4 year old and I'm 51: do the math -- I don't need a retirement fund, because I wont be able to retire!
2.
What is the mission of the Hands Of Christ fund and how have individuals been impacted since its inception?
The mission of this program is to end poverty by enabling people to achieve better jobs through educational opportunities. And it will succeed! About a dozen people so far have completed degree or certification programs with a hand up from Hands of Christ, and now have the foundation for financial stability. One at a time, it will succeed!

You also have introduced a service called “God’s Garage Sale.” What is the message behind it and how can someone participate?
"That's the dumbest thing I ever heard of, " was my reaction initially to the concept that is now the reality of God's Garage Sale at Asbury. Our congregation donates enough furniture, appliances, clothing and other goods to fill a gym -- and then "sells" it for the same price of God's grace. The widow gave her mites, the lady used her perfume to wash Christ's feet, and the wealthy man was told by Jesus to sell it all and give the proceeds to the poor. Good examples from which to take instruction, and I assure you this blesses us far more than it does those who are served. People truly in need are served lovingly, as we try and model our efforts in the same way that God provides for all He so loves -- freely. Volunteers can call me any time!

You are a “cheerful giver” who loves to give generously as described in II Corinthians 9:7? Why do you love to give and why do you think people are often reluctant to give?
I do give. I endeavor to tithe money. And time. I figure I have the resource of just over 100 hours of waking time each week I ought to tithe. God got my attention in a very close personal way a few years ago. He spared the life of a dear loved one. How can I not serve Him? He gave me His Son! Sooner or later, people come see with eyes open; it took His nudge to get me there. I rarely succeed tithing time, but I do keep myself reminded to try. Further, my Lord has given me far more than I deserve, and more than I need; others struggle to even survive. It blesses me immensely to know that I can use the resources with which God has provided me, and help His children to eat, to find shelter, to be clothed, and to flourish. It is exciting and fulfilling. Check out Hebrews 10:24 and take it from there!

Who are some of the most influential people in your life and why?
My dear friend and former pastor Rev. Mark Lacey showed me the path from darkness. My dear friend and current pastor Rev. Kip Laxson energizes my faith. The Missions Committee at my church fuels my inspiration to serve. Jenny Waltman at Grace Klein Construction opens my eyes to the needy and reminds me reach out. The presence of my family means that I am obligated to lead in faith. My law partner Lindsey Simmons influences my compassion and professional integrity. Former Chief Justice Bo Torbert showed me the majesty of the law and its basis in Christian principles. My friend Max Powell teaches by example to never forget the "least of these." My friend Ralph Ritter reminds me to serve til i sweat ("blisters are our friends!"). Ernie Haase anchors my awe at Christ's love through music. But my late mother gets credit on Earth for anything I accomplish and any giving; she truly taught by example, with patience, with love. When I grow up, I want to be a lot more like her. It's really inspiring to know that one day, I will see her again.

In March 2010 you were recognized in b Metro, The Magazine of Birmingham Living for having “reached the highest levels of ethical standards and professional excellence.” How are ethical professionalism and success connected?
Cheaters never prosper. Life is full of very painful examples of that.

What is your favorite quote?
"If you're going through hell, keep going." That was Sir Winston Churchill's exhortation to British soldiers fighting Nazis, but it's a life lesson. Tangents, sloth, and wrong paths are ruinous. Or worse. Romans 12:12 teaches the 3 things that make marches like that bearable.

How long have you and your wife Amy been married? What in your opinion is the secret to a great marriage?
Amy and I have been married for 9 years. I don't think there is a "secret" to a great marriage. Laughing together is big. Helping each other. Not taking for granted that "this person pledged her life to me." Cheerleading for each other. Pats on the hiney in the kitchen. Ensuring safety. I have learned a lot about not being selfish; let's call that one a work in progress.
